Aristotle himself argues that without being virtuous, supreme pleasure through contemplation can't be achieved. It is also true that for a person to understand that there is so much anguish on the globe, he needs contemplation. So, I believe, to justify Aristotle, there needs to be some kind of balance between contemplation and virtuous action.
In Book 1 of Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle places forth 3 different types of life that man associates with joy - a servile life of pleasure (which majority of people confuse with delight), a sophisticated life of politics (where man is designed for honour and higher divinity associated with smart men), and finally, just how of intellectual speculation - what we know as contemplation.
